The Hobbit Student Book Review by Tom

The book is about a Hobbit who lives in a hole in a hill in a place called ‘The Shire’. Gandalf (The wizard) brings a bunch of dwarfs to Bilbo’s Hobbit hole and encourages him to go on an adventure with them to find a mysterious stone being held in a mountain,  which has been destroyed and taken over by a dragon named ‘Smaug’. Their goal is to retrieve the stone and return it to The King of the Mountain.

One of the most iconic characters in my opinion is Gollum. I think he’s very special because he has a very evil personality and is extremely protective of a particular ring that turns you invisible!

In the story, the setting was sometimes very happy and cheerful (such as in The Shire). However, some of the time the setting seemed quite evil, stormy and rainy (such as Gollum’s cave which had a few piled-up bones and dead bodies).

The book was very good at pulling in the reader, making them not want to ever stop reading the book until it finishes.  J.R.R Tolken made sure there was lots of action and excitement going on as  the dwarfs, Gandalf, and Bilbo were stumbling across obstacles and mountains as they tried to reach the secret door that leads into the mountain so they could find the King’s Jewel located somewhere in the mountain where Smaug was resting.

My favourite character overall was Smaug. This is because his description is very detailed and he sounds like a very fierce, fire-breathing killer dragon. Including a dragon in The Hobbit was a very good addition because dragons are the perfect mythical beast for The Hobbit story in particular because of the Good vs Evil theme.

Smaug in The Hobbit Movies

The book was also made into a film which is also very popular, but in my opinion, reading the book is always better than the film! By reading the book you always find out more backstory to some of the characters in the story more than in a film. This is because in a book the author normally tells you what the characters are thinking and also what they’re saying. However, in films you don’t normally get to hear the characters thoughts.

Overall, The Hobbit is one of my favourite books I have ever read in my life!!
